Basically, a temperature sensor is an instrument which is used to gather information about the temperature of an object and to convert it to a form which can be understood by any person or any other instrument. Many types of temperature sensors are there, and they can be used for a variety of purposes raging from daily non-scientific issues to the laboratory-based scientific ones. It is immensely important to people because knowing the temperature of one’s surroundings not only helps them to choose the right kind of clothes, but having an accurate temperature-reading helps the scientists in their experiments. In today’s world, nearly each-and-every person is dependent on temperature sensors.

The most common form of temperature sensor in use is the normal mercury-thermometer. It is mostly used as a doctor’s thermometer for finding out the temperature of a feverish patient. But in some cases i.e. in the high school or college laboratories, they are used for temperature measurement in experiments where the accurate value of temperature is not that important. In this thermometer, the outside temperature expands or contracts the mercury, which by varying its position in the glass tube lets us know the approximate temperature of the surroundings. These are not very accurate but are extremely useful when an approximate value is required.
